As you move toward the top of the modern Porsche 911 lineup, you’ll encounter two distinct model ranges that each offer a completely unique touring experience. The Porsche 911 Turbo lineup pushes this iconic vehicle to the limits of its performance capabilities, while maintaining the ‘pure’ 911 look and feel. The GT3 is a motorsports-inspired alternative with some instantly recognizable design elements—and a manual transmission that is withheld from all but the rarest and most expensive Turbo configurations.

Both vehicles are incredible performers, but they’re likely to appeal to slightly different kinds of drivers. Our 2023 Porsche 911 Turbo vs. GT3 comparison can help you find the model that feels like your perfect match!

Porsche 911 Turbo vs. GT3: Configurations, Body Styles, Price

The 911 Turbo lineup includes the base 911 Turbo, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet, the 911 Turbo S, the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, and the new 911 Sport Classic. The first four of these models share most of their characteristics, while the last is a limited edition model with a unique value proposition. Turbo S and Sport Classic models deliver a lot more power than the base-level coupe and cabriolet trims. We’ll have more to say about performance later on.

The GT3 lineup includes just three models: the base 911 GT3, the 911 GT3 Touring, and the 911 GT3 RS. The GT3 Touring is essentially a less attention-grabbing version of the base GT3; the RS is exactly the opposite—and it also offers more power.

  • The Porsche 911 Turbo starts at $182,900 MSRP—around $13,000 more than the baseline GT3 and the GT3 Touring.
  • The Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet come in at well above $200,000, just like the GT3 RS. The limited edition Sport Classic is far and away the most expensive, with a starting price of $272,300 MSRP.
  • Only the Turbo lineup offers you a choice between coupe and convertible body styles. Every model in the GT3 lineup is a coupe; most also have distinct racing-inspired design features.

Porsche 911 Turbo vs. GT3: Performance

Whether you’re comparing the Porsche 911 Turbo S vs. GT3 RS, or trying to decide whether it’s worth it to choose the base Turbo over the base GT3, your decision will almost certainly involve a close look at each model’s equipment and specifications.

Here, we’ve laid out the most important points in broad strokes:

  • The base-level Porsche 911 Turbo already offers 54 more horsepower than the GT3 RS, and 70 more horsepower than the base GT3.
  • With up to 640 horsepower, the Turbo S is a lot more powerful, and significantly faster, than anything in the GT3 lineup.
  • A Turbo S Coupe can run from 0 to 60 in a lightning-fast 2.6 seconds. The GT3 RS can manage the same feet in a still-impressive 3.0 seconds.
  • However, you cannot pair either of the Turbo powertrains with a manual transmission—unless you opt for the limited edition Sport Classic. (Drivers seeking a manual transmission should generally stick with the GT3 or GT3 Touring, since the GT3 RS doesn’t offer a manual either.)

Although the Turbo lineup first looks as though it has the performance advantage, drivers comparing the Porsche GT3 vs. Turbo S will want to keep these caveats in mind:

  • The 911 Turbo & Turbo S models might be faster on straightaways, but the GT3 and GT3 RS include racing-derived features that make them better at handling tight turns and curves.
  • Although the dual-clutch automatic in the Turbo models is an amazing piece of machinery, some Westlake Village and Malibu drivers will appreciate the deep connection offered by the manual transmission in the GT3 and GT3 Touring.
  • The GT3 RS is something unique. Here, Porsche has pushed the boundaries of performance by optimizing the model’s exterior and handling—rather than its engine outputs. It adapts a Drag Reduction System straight out of Formula 1, and is the very first 911 that lets you adjust the compression and rebound of your dampers on the fly. It’s a sublimely adaptable machine that can offer something unique every time you take it out.

Where does the GT3 Touring fit into this equation? It isn’t as fast as the 911 Turbo and it doesn’t have the obvious race-ready features of the GT3 and GT3 RS. But if you want more than 500 horsepower, need a manual transmission, and don’t want to look like you’re always on your way to the track, then the GT3 Touring is precisely the right choice for you.
